Red's Lounge

Red's Lounge? It's the definition of a real-deal Mississippi juke joint. Don't expect to be spoiled with amenities. All you need is a been-there-done-that owner, some beers as big as your head and some "live" blues you'll never forget. (Oh, and MAYBE something out front on the grill.) This is how blues became blues... how the music grew up out of the cotton fields and onto a round piece of vinyl. Speaking of which, the building itself was called "Levine's Music Center" back in the day, and it's where Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm bought the instruments that played the first rock 'n roll song. Yeah, Red's is the real thing for sure...

Stone Pony Pizza

In June 2009, the idea of a gourmet pizza restaurant, located in the heart of Downtown Clarksdale, was born. The owners, Buddy Bass and Joe Weiss, cousins, are 4th generation Clarksdaleians who are proud of the history of Clarksdale and the new possibilities that await. With teenage, twenty and thirty year old children of their own, their idea was to create a place where kids and families would feel comfortable dining and relaxing. Second, they wanted to create a location that visitors to Clarksdale would enjoy and experience our local fare.

Hopson Plantation Commissary

The Hopson Plantation Commissary stands today in much the same condition as in its glory days over fifty years ago. The building is full of antique and historical items which create a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the deep south Delta. In 1935 the Hopson Plantation began a monumental changeover to become one of the first completely mechanized cotton operations in the world. In the fall of 1944, International Harvester introduced the first cotton picker on the Hopson farm making it the first in the world to grow and harvest a commercial acreage of cotton produced completely by mechanical methods. Today the commissary has indoor and outdoor stages with weekly entertainment and is available for dinners and receptions.

Abe's BBQ

Abraham Davis founded his first business in 1924 named Bungalow-Inn, located on Fourth Street; now called Martin Luther King Boulevard, where his excellent Bar-B-Q reputation spread across North Mississippi and Mid-South. The business moved to the crossroads of U.S. 49 & 61 where legend has it that the Delta blues king, Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil and the blues was born. Itís very possible that Robert Johnson, while sitting on a Coca-Cola case under one of the sycamore trees that was prominent at that corner back then, eating an Abeís Bar-B-Q made that legendary deal. It is a fact that Abraham Davis surrendered his soul to eat lunch, and coined the words to Abeís famous sauce, THE COME BACK SAUCE: Once youíve eaten our sandwich, you have to come back for more. In 1960 the business was renamed Abeís Bar-B-Q, horning Abe Davis, its founder.

Kathryn's On Moon Lake

In 1937 Frank and Kathryn Rossi opened a small cafe in their house on the banks of beautiful Moon Lake Mississippi offering authentic Italian cuisine made from the Rossi family recipes that had been handed down for generations. The world famous onion ring and salad recipe used today, are the same recipe the Rossi’s used in 1937. In 2010, local musician John Mohead purchased and reopened this memorable piece of Mississippi history. The building hadn’t changed in 70 years. The same knotty pine paneling, the same uneven floors, the same tiny bathrooms... Eighty years later we think Kathryn and Frank would approve.

Ranchero BBQ

Nelms Mitchell started the Ranchero Restaurant in 1959 in a one room concrete building that catered almost exclusively to a teenage crowd. By 1976, almost 20 years later, it had become the place where the same teenagers brought their families. The Ranch (to which the Ranchero is often referred) just seemed to grow up with those first teenagers. Through the years, The Ranchero has not only earned the reputation for outstanding food and a great place to bring the family, it has also become a picture gallery of sports memorabilia. The Nelms Mitchell family takes great pride in those items brought in by local customers. You are invited to stroll through the restaurant and enjoy the treasures and priceless memorabilia of the Ranch's customers and loyal patrons

Hick's Famous Hot Tamales

Eugene Hicks, born in 1944, has been making hot tamales since 1960. Acy Ware, who peddled tamales on the streets of Clarksdale, gave Hicks his recipe. In 1970, Hicks opened his first restaurant. The recipe has changed a bit over the years as he has experimented with different meats and spices. Hicks has never committed a recipe to writing, though. He works alone to cook and spice the meat, keeping the secrets to himself.

The Riverside Hotel

Since 1944 the Riverside Hotel has provided lodging in the Delta for traveling musicians and like-minded folk. It was home to some, including Sunny Boy Williamson II, Ike Turner, and Robert Nighthawk. Others, like Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters, made the Riverside their home away from home as they criss-crossed the South. Still family owned and operated, the Riverside Hotel offers a singular lodging experience: an opportunity to experience old-school Southern hospitality and lay your hat where the bluesmen laid theirs, by and by.
